What if I baked Homemade Oreos?

*stomach growls*

This past What if Wednesday my wonderful and stylin' roommate Renn chose two pins for me to try: Homemade Oreos and a DIY Flower Wreath.

The people of Instagram must have been pretty hungry because the Homemade Oreos won the vote. Yessss.

I have made Homemade Oreos before using a box cake mix, but I have never made them from scratch, so that was the new baking experience for me.

My pin led me to the original Oreo recipe, which guided me on my sweet journey. (sweet, get it?) I appreciated how the recipe also had the cake mix option.

Ingredients

Surprisingly enough, I had most of the ingredients needed for this recipe. I made a quick trip to Lin's for butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar and cream cheese. I had everything but the cream cheese, I just needed more of the other ingredients.

Cookie Dough

I followed the recipe to a T. Mostly, because I was scared that if I didn't, I would mess up pretty badly. Lets just say that I'm not naturally adept at making food.

I mixed all of the dry ingredients for the cookies. Then I mixed the wet ingredients in a separate bowl and combined them.

The dough was pretty thick, so if you are blessed enough to have a Kitchen aid or Bosch, I would recommend using that. The next step was to put the dough in the fridge for 30 min. That seemed like such a long time late at night! It gave me a chance to tidy up the kitchen, so I guess that was good.

Roll 'em and Squish 'em

After I took the dough out of the fridge, I rolled it into balls on two cookie sheets. Then, as the recipe said, I squished the dough down a little bit to help the cookies take shape.

In the oven they went. One thing I truly love about cookies is that they only take 8 minutes to bake. Other things (I'm looking at you cake) can take for-ev-er.

Side note: The recipe said that it makes 20 servings, which I assumed was 20 finished Oreos. However, the dough only stretched to 15 finished cookies.

Whip but No Nay Nay

While the cookies were cooling, I whipped up the frosting, literally. I definitely should have used a bigger bowl when mixing in the powdered sugar, or a different technique. That stuff goes everywhere. After making a complete mess, I actually switched it all to a bigger bowl. It helped a little.

Putting Everything Together

I matched up all the cookies with a similar size cookie buddy. Then I put a big glob of frosting in between the cookies and smooshed them together. Wha la! Homemade Oreo complete.

Final Results

These cookies were delicious! I enjoyed making them. It reminded me how much I like baking and then sharing that joy with others. There was a lot of cream cheese frosting leftover so I think I might have to make more.

(1st: me enjoying my first taste 2nd: all the leftover frosting)

Though these Homemade Oreos turned out great, I think in the future I will stick to my cake mix recipe that I am used to using. It is easier, and I think maybe better. Maybe I will have to do a taste test to find out. Yummm.

Thanks for reading! See ya next week!
