What if I made a Mini Piñata?

Time to party!

This week for my What if Wednesday activity my super cool friend, Kaitlyn, picked my two pins. She chose a mini piñata and an origami jumping frog.

The Vote

The mini piñata was by far the favorite. I don't know what it is about small things but they are always so cute! There has to be some scientific reason for that. Hmm..

Supplies

I ended up using the streamers instead of the tissue paper, because I thought they looked more festive.

Drawing a Donkey

First, I drew a very rough shape of a donkey on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. Then I traced the first piece onto another piece of cardboard. They were pretty close to identical...close enough.

Assembling

Next, I cut out strips of cardboard about a half an inch long. These were meant to connect the two sides of the donkey. This part was pretty difficult. My cardboard strips were too thick to bend around the shape well. I tried my best to make it work, mostly using an excessive amount of tape.

(He's having a photoshoot)

Feathering Streamers

I had to stop mid-DIY to go work on a group project (don't we all love those). When I got back, it was time for the fun part. I cut my colorful streamer in half and started individually cutting each strip to create the feathering. Please don't do this. It takes up waaaayy more time than necessary.

Once, I figured out (duh) to fold the piece of streamer up, almost like an accordion, and only have to cut a few times, things got much better...kind of.

Tiny Layer, After Tiny Layer

After each strip of feathered streamer was ready, I taped it to the piñata, all the way around. I overlapped the layers as I went. It slowly got more difficult, because my packing tape wasn't sticking as nicely as I wanted it to. I actually started using some washi tape that I found and it worked better some of the time.

I had to put separate shorter layers up the piñata donkey's back in order to cover the whole thing.

PSA: Mini things are cute. BUT they can be infuriating to put together because you feel like a giant with clumsy sausage fingers.

Stuffing the Piñata

Trimming and Pins

After I finally covered the whole piñata, I trimmed the layers, so you could actually see the shape of the donkey. I also thought these little pins I had would work perfectly for his eyes.

(above: before trimming, its a bird, its a plane, its a hot mess)

Final Results

Pretty cute mini piñata, if I do say so myself. I pinned a ribbon loop on him so that I could hang him. Maybe on a Christmas tree? Keychain? The possibilities are endless. Just a mini piñata for your mini fiesta!

Suggestions

-Print out the drawing of the donkey

-Use tape and double-sided tape

-Use thinner cardboard, like from a shoe box

-Fold your layers to feather them
