What if I tried 7 morning habits?

A majestic Rykeraptor greeting the sun.

(I thought I'd post a picture of a sunrise, but realized I have never been up early enough to take a picture of such a thing. So, my brother posing as a velociraptor will have to do.)
This week my friend, Sidney, chose my pins for What if Wednesday: 7 morning habits and morning yoga.

I was kind of surprised by the results; 7 morning habits got the most votes. I guess people want to have better mornings. I mean, it makes sense. I'd love to have better mornings.
Tip #1: No Snooze
Yikes. I was worried about this first tip because usually I set 3 or 4 alarms to wake up every morning. I see how waking up at one set time would be helpful...but morning Lauren is different than awake Lauren. (jeez, now I'm one of those people who talk in the first person)

(left: Wednesday's alarm; right: normal alarms)
So, I only set one alarm and I was determined not to press snooze. My phone kept doing this weird thing that night where it would say it was charging and when I checked later it wasn't. I set my alarm and plugged it in anyways and hoped for the best. Except...the best didn't happen.
I frantically woke up 10 minutes before I was supposed to leave. I'm not sure if my alarm even went off or if I just slept through it. It's not a peaceful alarm either, its one of those annoying ones that makes you cringe at any other time of day. This was not a great start to my new morning routine.
I quickly stretched and gulped down some water. I normally keep a water bottle by my bed anyways, because I'm often thirsty.
My mom suggested that since I have such a hard time waking up in the morning, I should actually use the glass of water to pour on myself to make sure I wake up. As I have mentioned before, my mom knows the monster that I can be in the morning. (thanks for the tip Mom!)

Tip #4: No Phone
Other than my alarm and music, I didn't use my phone all morning. I'm usually too much in a rush to use it anyways.
Tip #5: Music
I turned on Spotify and sat down in front of my mirror and tried to get ready as fast as possible. (I would say as fast as humanly possible, but I am not a fast human in any way.)
As my class neared, I had an internal struggle on whether I should go and be late, or not go. I decided not to be 20 min late, especially because the entrance to the classroom is in the front (who does that?) I took a deep breath and actually spent time putting on my eyeliner.
I jammed out to my music and resisted the urge to sing along, because my next door roommate wasn't up yet. I love Sam Smith lately, and this song from James Arthur.

Tip #6: Breakfast
Usually my breakfast consists of a yogurt or Muscle Milk that I grab on my way out the door. Since I had extra time this morning, I actually made scrambled eggs. Yum.

Tip #7: Read
On a normal morning, I don't think I could leave myself enough time to read, unless I had nowhere to go. But I have places to be...mostly school.
I had started reading this book about a year and a half ago. I have terrible memory, so I started it again. It was pretty good. I like reading a lot, but I have to get in the rhythm of reading. Usually every summer, when my brain isn't burnt out from school, I read a ton.
Results
Honestly, this was more of a pin fail than a pin win for me. I already drink water, listen to music, eat breakfast, and stretch in the morning. As far as not snoozing my alarm, not sure that is possible for me. It takes a lot of firepower to wake me up in the morning. Often my motivation for getting out of bed is that I might have a chance to take a nap later in the day. I love sleeping.

I think these tips might help you if you're already at least a little bit of a morning person. However, they didn't really help me a whole lot. I still had a strong desire to just go back to bed until my next class. Try it out and see if they work! (I do suggest having a backup alarm though).
